Responsive Cities is a biennial international symposium on the future of cities organized by the Advanced Architecture Group of IAAC, bringing together changemakers from across the world .
As our cities continue to grow and expand, responding to population growth, urbanization and climate change, rethinking the future of our cities has never been more relevant. The Responsive Cities Symposium addresses the changing needs of our cities through topics such as decarbonization, adaptation and mitigation, materialize and build, and co-design, to name but a few. Furthermore, this symposium considers the city from the perspecitive of human and non-human species, as well as exploring the territorial scale down to that of materials and organisms. With the rapid evolution of technology, computational tools, and digital fabrication strategies, these topics too are fundamental in the rethinking of our cities and to the discussion.
Founded in 2016 by Areti Markopoulou, Chiara Farinea and Mathilde Marengo, each edition has been hosted within the framework of a European funded project, relating the current research with the symposium and bringing together international speakers from across the world. Each edition hosts a call for papers and projects, bringing together those at the forefront of rethinking our cities from the field of academia, but also from industry. The call for papers is peer-reviewed by an international scientific committee, and the selected papers and projects are published in the symposium proceedings with an ISBN number. The goal is to showcase the work and research being developed, to build long lasting networks and to inspire the current and future changemakers.
