Director of Urbanitree // Founder of IAAC

Vicente Guallart is an architect and urban planner who promotes the reinvention of cities in the 21st century, responding to the challenges and opportunities of the post-digital revolution society, ecological urbanism, and citizen empowerment. His professional experience is deeply rooted in the architectural tradition of Barcelona, where architects work in three areas: they engage in professional practice, are involved in research and education, and are also connected to urban projects through public initiatives. With his professional team, Urbanitree, he develops ecological projects in various locations around the world. He is the co-author of the Terrazas para la Vida project, the tallest wooden structure building in Spain, the Africanflow building, and a kindergarten in Cameroon, built with locally sourced azobé wood.  In the field of education and research, Guallart is a co-founder of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), which runs the most international Master’s program in Architecture and Urbanism in Southern Europe. He is also a promoter of Fab Lab Barcelona in collaboration with MIT, as well as of digital fabrication in Barcelona and Catalonia, with its cultural, industrial, and urban implications. He served as the Chief Architect of the City of Barcelona from 2011 to 2015 and as the first director of Urban Habitat (now Urban Ecology), a department that integrates Urbanism, Infrastructure, Environment, and Information Technologies, overseeing more than 400 projects.
